Thirds Studio

A creative studio comprised of industrial designers, Adeline Masbrata and John Pham. We created this studio as our creative outlet to design and make things we want, while also helping others realize their creative ideas

Made for the home and the people who live in them.

We enjoy making low-tech products to make users’ daily routines just a bit more enjoyable.

The Products

Concrete Tray

A rounded square concrete tray to hold any trinkets, jewelry, or parts you'd like it to hold.

Set on a soft baize padding to avoid scratching any delicate surfaces.

Magnetic Concrete Tray

We designed this rounded square magnetic concrete parts tray with an acrylic in-lay modeled and machined to resemble water ripples. 5 strong magnets beneath the acrylic hold onto small metal parts.

Set on a soft baize padding to avoid scratching any delicate surfaces.

Wave Planter

A subtle wave top concrete planter to complement the organic movement of your plants while typing in simplicity and texture to your home.

Created by 3D printing, silicone mold making, and casting concrete, the planter has the unique texture of a 3D print combined with the natural feel of concrete material.

The Process

Magnetic Concrete Tray

The tray was first imagined as a magnetic concrete tray with a seamless top surface and hidden magnets attached on the underside.

Magnetic Concrete Tray: Attempt 1

After modeling the tray in Solidworks, we machined a 2-part mold and master tray mold out of renshape on our desktop CNC machine.

We poured the silicone mix to create the mold.

We then poured the concrete into our new mold and…

The Magnetic NOT-concrete (Wooden) Tray

The 2-sided machining required lots of post-processing finishing to get our desired polished finish.

it failed

again and again and again.

We ended up spending almost 2 months going through trials and continued errors with this version of the tray.

But it wasn’t all for naught,

these failures resulted in 3 products we are now proud of.

CNC machined and fully finished by hand, this is our magnetic black walnut tray.

We sourced the wood at a local wood shop’s scrap pile. We had a lot of fun turning a piece of scrap wood into this beautiful, unique piece.

Magnetic Concrete Tray: Final Version

This is the master mold machined out of renshape.

We prepped the 2-part mold by priming the pieces and 3D printing walls.

We assembled the pieces, including a block to create a spout in the resulting mold to pour concrete through.

We prime the piece before making the cast with silicone.

Concrete Tray

We created the concrete tray as a failed version of the magnetic concrete tray.

Since we were having issues with the 2-part mold, we used the top side of the first magnetic concrete tray to create this 1-part mold.

The current magnetic concrete tray contains an acrylic inlay to cover the magnets set on the top of the tray. We designed and machined the inlay to look like water ripples. We chose acrylic to help create the water effect.

We used 3D printing to mock up inlay designs until we found the design we liked best.
