An aroma diffuser and photo printer that combines the Polaroid brand and the concept of healthy living in a product that utilizes the visual and olfactory senses to promote positive nostalgic thoughts.

“The Proust Effect”

According to Psychology Today, the memories attached to an aroma can help you relive the positive associations linked with the people and places of your past experiences. This association between scent and memories is called “the Proust Effect”.

(e.g. The smell of Mom’s perfume reminds you of when she would hug you as a child.)

How do the ideas of Polaroid, Healthy Living, and “the Proust Effect” come together?

The Polaroid brand is often associated with the themes of nostalgia and happy memories. Healthy living isn’t only in terms of physical health, but also mental health. Polaroid Factory promotes good mental health using “the Proust Effect”.

How Does it Work?

Match a related scent to your chosen picture and relive your happy memories as you look at the picture and breathe in the scent.

 

Polaroid Factory in the home.

Creating a physical model gave me a better sense of scale and allowed me to see my design in a real home environment. To create this model, I FDM 3D printed it in 3 main parts that I finished by sanding, patching, painting, and putting the pieces together.
